HOW DOES IT WORK?

While with lasers, the extension of the thermal effect is controlled by the density of power, spot size and duration of the application, the impact of RF on the skin depends on the impendence of the tissue (ohms), RF incident power (watts), exposure time (seconds) and electrode configuration. As opposed to laser rays, which are absorbed by the skin chromophores (depending on skin type), the RF depends on the resistance of the tissue, independent of skin type1515.

As far as its effectiveness and penetrabilitthere is a relationship according to:

  • The wave frequency used
  • Composition of the medium where is act
  • The system employed (bipolar or monopolar
  • The tissue refrigeration method
  • The application method, power and total dose used

The thermal effect of radiofrequency is conditioned by the type of radiofrequency, the level of power used, the type of tissue treated and the duration of the procedure. Definitely, the use of bipolar or unipolar radiofrequency is also an influence as well as the design and size of the emission electrode of the radiofrequency.

Dipole rotation produced diathermy

The thermal effect produced on the tissue is based on diatermia; that is: In the effect of deep heat production generated on interacting on the molecules and structures of the tissue due to ionic movement and the agitation of the polar molecules. The organism’s cells and molecules vibrate and change their orientation millions of times per second, while the radiofrequency changes polarity. This distortion movements and molecular friction cause in increase in temperature and consequently, internal heating of the tissues.

Diathermy is used to treat affectations that respond to heat but that cannot be reached by surface heating. Through heat deposit, the cellular physiological functions are reactivated and intense vasodilation is induced which is translated as bio stimulation with an increase in microcirculation, reduction in muscular contractions, reabsorbtion of liquid retention, antalgic effects and others.

The word “diathermy” was created by Nageischimidt in 1907 and is described as the technique used to originate therapeutic heating in the tissues by converting forms of physical energy such as electromagnetic fields, ultrasounds, microwaves and radiofrequency into heat, after being transmitted through the skin to deeper areas.
